The Santa Clara Broncos (17-8, 7-3 WCC) upset their arch rival, the No. 22 Saint Mary’s Gaels (19-5, 7-2 WCC), 77-72, inside the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, California.
Saint Mary’s entered the AP Top-25 earlier this week for the first time since November 11, 2019.
The win for Santa Clara ended a 43-game losing streak against AP Top-25 teams. The last win was November 19th, 2004 when they upset No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels in Oakland, California, 77-66.
Junior Jalen Williams recorded a double-double, finishing with 18 points and 10 assists in 33 minutes.
PJ Pipes (21) and Josip Vrankic (16) also finished in double-figures for SCU.
SCU made 31-of-56 (55.4%) from the field, 6-of-15 (40.0%) from 3-point range and 9-of-13 (69.2%) at the free throw line.
This is definitely the biggest win of the Herb Sendek era, which sounds weird considering they just beat BYU two weeks ago.
Tommy Kuhse led SMC with 16 points and Matthias Tass finished with 11 points.
Saint Mary’s quite frankly has no one to blame but themselves for this loss. As a team they missed nine layups. NINE! That’s 18 points left on the board in a five point game.
The Gaels made 26-of-60 (43.3%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42.1%) from 3-point range and 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the free throw line.
The Santa Clara Broncos host the San Francisco Dons (19-6, 6-4 WCC) on Saturday, February 12th at 3:00 PM (Pacific Time).
The Saint Mary’s Gaels host the San Diego Toreros (13-11, 6-5 WCC) on Thursday, February 10th at 6:00 PM (Pacific Time).
