San Jose State Spartans Fall To Fresno State Bulldogs in Regular Season Finale

The San Jose State Spartans (5-7, 3-5 MWC) fall to the Fresno State Bulldogs (9-3, 6-2 MWC), 40-9, for the Valley Trophy against their arch-rival at CEFCU Stadium.

All of SJSU’s points came on three Matt Mercurio field goals.

In his final game as a Spartan, Nick Starkel completed 19-of-42 passes (45.2%) for 260 yards (6.2 average) with no touchdowns and no interceptions, but did lose one fumble.

Senior Tyler Nevens was held to just 45 rushing yards on 12 carries (3.8 average).

San Jose State was 5-4 after nine games, needing just one win in the final three games, the last two of them at home, to become bowl eligible for the second consecutive season.

After a tough 27-24 loss on the road to Nevada to put them at 5-5, SJSU was outscored 88-26 in back-to-back home games on national television the last two weeks to finish the year 5-7 and on a three-game losing streak.

This wasn’t the season the team or the fans expected to have, but it was mostly a battle till the very end, but the Blue and Gold were unable to finish the job.

I’m a big believer that you get what you earn. A brutal finish to the regular season and to finish with a 5-7 overall record, that’s what SJSU earned this year.

Unfortunately, the Spartans were consistently inconsistent in 2021.

There’s not much to say other than this was a disappointing season. It was imperative that they made it to a bowl game this year and they failed to get it done.

There’s only 282 days until the 2022 season opener against Portland State inside CEFCU Stadium on September 3rd, 2022.
