Wisconsin Badgers Cruise Past UW-Green Bay Phoenix

On a night in which the program honored the best coach in program history in Bo Ryan, the Wisconsin Badgers (2-0) cruised to a 72-34 victory over in-state rival, the UW-Green Bay Phoenix (0-2) inside the Kohl Center.

Steven Crowl finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Jonathan Davis had 15 points and five rebounds and Brad Davison had a quiet 15 points to go along with three rebounds.

And here’s a picture from halftime when UW honored Bo Ryan:

Brad Davis postgame talking about sophomore Steven Crowl: “He’s pretty good” with a smirk.

I personally don’t put a ton of stock into the margin of victory in these early season games against inferior teams, but rather I pay attention to how the team is playing. After watching these first two games to start the year, I don’t see how you can’t be wildly encouraged with what you’ve seen.

UW-Green Bay head coach Will Ryan postgame said: “Hats off to what I think is a really good Wisconsin team. They played a great game. They locked their jaw and got after it defensively.”

“I think they can definitely surprise some people this year. If they get after it defensively like that, they can be pretty good,” Ryan said.

UW-Green Bay shot 23.5 percent from the field. That’s the lowest mark ever by a Badgers opponent at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers had 15 offensive rebounds in the season opener against St. Francis Brooklyn and they had 18 tonight against UWGB. UW had 15 or more offensive rebounds just once all of last season.

It was not a lights out shooting night for UW, however. The Badgers were 24-for-64 (37.5%) from the field, 5-of-21 (23.8%) from 3-point range, but was great at the free throw line shooting 19-of-21 (90.5%). UW did limit their turnovers to just seven turnovers on the night and I believe three of them were offensive fouls.

Still lots to work on for UW, but I’m liking how the players are playing and have improved from game one to game two.
