No. 12 Wisconsin Badgers Come Up Short Against No. 19 Penn State in Season Opener

It’s been overcast and cloudy all day and that’s how the season opener went for the Wisconsin Badgers. A disappointing day for the Wisconsin offense finished with Graham Mertz’s second interception of the day, as the No. 12 Wisconsin Badgers (0-1, 0-1) lose to No. 19 Penn State (1-0, 1-0), 16-10, at Camp Randall Stadium.

It was a nightmare for Wisconsin inside the 10-yard line today.

I am extremely disappointed with Graham Mertz’s performance today. I don’t necessarily have a “problem” with that last interception, but I do have a problem with Mertz missing a WIDE OPEN Chimere Dike two plays before in the end zone.

There was not a single special play by Mertz today. He’s had one good game in his career. Is it possible Illinois’ defense last year was the worst in the country? I smell the sales of Mertz merchandise lacking.

Maybe that’s a little too harsh to say that about a college kid, but maybe that’s a little too real.

The Badgers just committed too many self inflicted wounds, whether it was the three turnovers (to Penn State’s zero), penalties, missed tackles, secondary getting burned, etc..

Anyone that knows me knows that I’m a huge fan of Paul Chryst as both a head coach and a play caller, but his conservative play calling frustrated me today.

Paul Chryst did not have much of an explanation on why we didn’t see Jalen Berger today. Just said that Chez Mellusi and Isaac Guerendo were playing well.

The defense played near perfect in the first half, but that smell in the second half was the secondary getting torched. Not to mention there were way too many missed tackles.

It happens again in 2021. That’s how it works. It never ends.

Up Next:

The Badgers will need to bounce back next week when UW hosts Eastern Michigan (1-0) next Saturday, September 11 inside Camp Randall Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM (Central Time) and will be nationally televised on FS1.
