The defending Mountain West Conference champions, the San José State Spartans (1-0) kicked off the 2021 season with a 45-14 win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds inside CEFCU Stadium.
The announced attendance was 16,204. It’s the largest crowd for a SJSU home opener since 2011.
Nick Starkel finished 17-of-28 for 394 yards and four touchdowns and a rushing touchdown with one interception. The 17 completions went to nine different receivers.
SJSU outgained Southern Utah 534-250.
The Spartans did what they should have done against a FCS opponent and were able to get backups some burn.
San José State will play the No. 15 USC Trojans next Saturday, September 4th inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM (Central Time) and will be televised on the PAC-12 Network.
As I write this, USC is a 15-point favorite, per Bovada.
