The San José State Spartans are coming off a historic 2020 season for the program where they finished 7-1, winning the Mountain West Championship and appearing in the programs first bowl game since 2015, albeit an embarrassing 34-13 loss to Ball State.
Tonight’s season opener is against Southern Utah at 9:00 PM (Central Time) and will be nationally televised on CBSSN.
Brent Brennan, 5th season
Overall: 15-30 (.333)
Mountain West: 11-20 (.355)
Bowls: 0-1 (.000)
Can the Spartans repeat as Mountain West Champs? Well, they have a good chance!
The Spartans are returning 19 starters from last season, including quarterback Nick Starkel and running back’s Tyler Nevens and Kairee Robinson.
For me, the two biggest losses are wide receivers Tre Walker and Bailey Gaither. Finding a true No. 1 receiver is the biggest wildcard for the program.
Derrick Odum has done a pretty good job with the defense, considering just two seasons ago the unit ranked 106th nationally. In 2020, the defense ranked in the top-30 in scoring defense.
Cade Hall and Viliami Fehoko help make the best defensive line in the conference.
Kyle Harmon leads the linebacker crew, as all four of the listed starters are seniors.
The biggest question for the defense is: can they improve on taking the ball away? In 2020, the defense only forced three interceptions and recovered five fumbles.
Season Opener Prediction:
San José State 35, Southern Utah 17.
After tonight’s opener, SJSU travels to the LA Coliseum to play USC. That is a game that I think will be much closer that people expect it to be.
November 6th is the crucial game for the Spartans. They travel to Reno to play the Nevada Wolf Pack. Nevada is predicted by many to win the West Division. San Diego State will be in the conversation for the West Division, but my opinion is the winner of this SJSU/Nevada game on November 6 will win the West.
I’m predicting SJSU to finish 10-2 overall and 7-1 in Mountain West play.
