The Tampa Bay Lightning fall to the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2 in overtime, in Game 3 inside Amalie Arena. Tampa Bay now leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.
This was a huge missed opportunity by the Bolts to take a stranglehold on the series. Instead, it’s a 2-1 series and Carolina has a little life now.
Nikita Kucherov has no question had some terrific moments in these playoffs, but taking an offensive-zone penalty in overtime, 200 feet from his own net proved to be costly. Whether you like the call or not, it’s a tough loss considering how well the Lightning played for most of the game.
Tampa Bay had some extended pressure with some near misses a few times, but were never able to get one past Petr Mrazek, who made a few big saves for Carolina, to take a lead.
Both Brayden Point and Victor Hedman postgame said that they liked a lot about their game tonight, especially their compete. Obviously they were disappointed to let this great opportunity slip away, but they felt like if they repeat this effort, they’ll be good going into Game 4.
Head Coach Jon Cooper said he liked a lot about the Bolts play in Game 3, he felt they competed hard and created some good scoring chances. “We did pretty much everything we wanted to do except get one more goal than them.”
Cooper also said that Tampa Bay has gotten better with each game of the series. “You’ve got to just keep trusting your process, and our guys have done a hell of a job of doing that and I expect they’ll do it again.”
Game 4 from Amalie Arena will be on Saturday, June 5. Game time is set for 3:00 PM (Central Time) and will be televised on USA.
