The UW-Milwaukee Panthers (6-5, 5-4) overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland State Vikings (10-5, 10-2), 81-80 in overtime inside the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Trailing 66-52 with 2:00 remaining in regulation, UWM finished regulation on a 21-7 run to tie the game at 73-73 and force overtime.
After Cleveland State took a 80-79 lead in overtime with 34 seconds remain, the Panthers had a chance to take the lead. Te’Jon Lucas missed a jumper with 10 seconds remaining, but Courtney Brown Jr. got the offensive rebound and found DeAndre Gholston for what turned out to be the game winning layup with three seconds left.
Te’Jon Lucas had a game-high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting (3-for-7 from 3) and 6-of-6 at the free throw line in 39 minutes. DeAndre Gholston added 21 points in 42 minutes of action. Donovan Newby was the only other Panther in double-figures with 10 points in 15 minutes.
UWM will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to take on IUPUI (3-6, 2-6) next week on Friday and Saturday (January 29 & 30). Friday’s game is at 5:00 PM (Central Time).
