Playing in their first game since November 25, and only the second game all season, the San Jose State Spartans women’s basketball team defeated Utah State in the Mountain West Conference opener for both schools, 78-73.
The teams had to play in Phoenix, Arizona on the Grand Canyon University campus due to SJSU being unable to host the games because of Santa Clara County’s restrictions.
Tyra Whitehead and Meghan Oberg each scored 18 points to lead SJSU. Danae Marquez added 12 points and Raziya Potter chipped in 11.
The Spartans shot 27-for-51 (44.3%) from the field, 10-for-25 (40.0%) from 3-point range, but only shot 14-of-23 (60.9%) from the free throw line.
SJSU did have 18 assists on the 27 made field goals, but also had 16 turnovers.
The Spartans and Utah State Aggies will play again in Arizona on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM (Central) / Noon (Pacific). Game will be aired on the Mountain West Network.
