The Mountain West Conference announced tonight that Saturday’s rivalry game between San Jose State and Fresno State for the Valley Trophy has been cancelled. Contact tracing of COVID-19 within the Fresno State program is preventing the Bulldogs from playing.
Since the Mountain West left no scheduled bye weeks in the schedule before the Mountain West Championship game on December 19, there’s currently no opening for the two teams to reschedule the game.
Assuming the two programs don’t meet at a later date, it’ll be the second time since 1996 that the Spartans and Bulldogs won’t play each other. The other time was in 2012 when Fresno State was in their first season in the Mountain West and San Jose State was still in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
The two programs have met 83 times, with Fresno State leading the all-time series 42-38-3.
San Jose State is still scheduled to play on the road next Saturday, November 28, against the Boise State Broncos. Kickoff time hasn’t been announced yet. The game will be televised on either FS1 or FS2.
