I’m a month late on this, but just saw the news on it last night.
San Jose State’s softball head coach, Peter Turner, won’t be returning. The school decided not to renew his contract. Turner found out about it via text.
Turner is the winningest coach in program history, compiling a 413-329 (.557) record in his 14 seasons at the helm.
Softball has been one of the most consistent programs at SJSU over the past decade or so, and SJSU and Athletic Director Marie Tuite don’t want to bring the coach back? Yet they continue to make excuses for Jean Prioleau and Brent Brennan.
At least to Brennan’s credit, the football program showed some sort of life in 2019. Prioleau on the other hand hasn’t showed any improvement with the men’s basketball team and his 15-77 (.163) record shows it.
This seems similar to when SJSU ran off Men’s Basketball coach Dave Wojcik after five seasons when he was finally turning the program around.
I guess SJSU is allergic to success and they just want to act like they’re a true D1 program, not actually try to get wins like one.
What SJSU should do is make the necessary moves in the Athletic Department and also make a necessary change at the school’s president position.
