The San Jose State Spartans (3-2, 1-1 MWC) beat the New Mexico Lobos 32-21 in front of 16,119 fans inside of CEFCU Stadium to pick up their first Mountain West Conference victory of the season.
SJSU jumped out to a 26-0 lead before the Lobos scored late in the first half to make it 26-7 at halftime.
Senior quarterback Josh Love threw for 405 yards and two touchdowns for SJSU. Redshirt freshman kicker Matt Mercurio tied a program single game record with four made field goals in the victory.
The Spartans as good as they looked on the offensive end, need to find a way to score more touchdowns while in the red zone rather than settling for field goals.
The Spartans defense forced six New Mexico turnovers, but had trouble containing the running part of Sheriron Jones’ game. Jones threw for 127 yards with two touchdowns and three INT’s after coming in for Tevaka Tuioti in the second quarter. But Jones also ran for 104 yards and a touchdown.
The Spartans will be back in action next Saturday, October 12 when they travel to Reno to take on Nevada. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm (PT) and the game broadcast will be on AT&T SportsNet.
