Thanks to some timely hitting from the middle of the order and a great outing from Zach Davies, the Crew went on the road Thursday night and beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1.
Davies went seven innings, giving up just one run in five hits. It was his eighth victory of the season and lowered his ERA to a team best 2.79. Jeremy Jeffress and Matt Albers finished the job in relief of Davies.
The key inning was the eighth. After Arizona’s starter Merrill Kelly allowed just three hits in the first seven innings, the Brewers jumped all over reliever Yoan Lopez. They scored three runs, including what proved to be the winning run courtesy of an RBI single to Orlando Arcia. Ryan Braun hit his 14th home run in the top of the ninth to give the Crew some insurance.
The Brewers improve to 51-47 on the season and sit just two games behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the NL Central.
Milwaukee and Arizona will go at it again tomorrow night at Chase Field in Phoenix. First pitch is scheduled for 8:40pm (CT).
