The University of Wisconsin Softball team opened up the NCAA Tournament in the Norman Regional with a win over Notre Dame tonight, beating the Irish 4-2 to advance to the winner’s bracket.
The Badgers’ first run of the game came in the top of the second. A walk and a hit-by-pitch put Badgers on first and second for Caroline Hedgcock. The Junior snuck a single up the middle, scoring sophomore Lauren Foster who had a great slide around the catcher to get the run.
Taking a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning, sophomore Taylor Johnson smashed her 14th home run of the season to give Wisconsin a 4-0 lead. The home run also scored Ally Miklesh and Tyra Turner and gave UW some insurance runs heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Those insurance runs proved to be huge, as Notre Dame battled back with a pair of hits and walks in the bottom of the frame to score two to cut it to a 4-2 UW lead. With the bases loaded and two out, Kelly Welsh caught a pop-up to end the inning and the game.
Junior ace Kaitlyn Menz pitched a complete game for her 19th win of the season.
The Badgers will face the No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma tomorrow at 3:00 pm (CT).
