On the strength of a triple-double by Ethan Happ, Wisconsin coasted to a 85-63 season-opening win over Coppin State in front of a sellout crowd of 17,287 on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.
Happ tallied the second triple-double in school history scoring 10 points, 11 rebounds, and a career high 12 assists.
D’Mitrik Trice led the Badgers with a career high 21 points on 5-9 from beyond the arc, while Brevin Pritzl finished with 16 points on the night.
Happ didn’t score a bucket until the 10:38 mark of the first half. Happ faced double teams nearly every time he touched the ball, something that will likely happen a lot this season.
“I hope everybody appreciates the impact he has,” UW head coach Greg Gard said when talking about Ethan Happ. “Because players like him are rare.”
Pritzl finished off a 20-2 UW run with a 3-pointer that gave the Badgers a 26-13 lead with 9:37 left in the first half.
Wisconsin plays Xavier in the Gavitt Tipoff Games in Cincinnati on Tuesday, November 13th. The Musketeers defeated the Badgers 80-70 at the Kohl Center last year in a game that was much closer than the score.
